Crawfish Queen: Hollie Ross
One of the best parts of running The Crawfish App is meeting all of the hardworking and interesting folks behind the crawfish businesses listed on the app. Hollie Ross, the "Crawfish Queen" of Sportsman Crossing, and I connected several years back when we realized we were having babies around the same time, and we've kept in touch ever since. Besides their famous (secret recipe) boiled crawfish sold during the Springtime, her family's very popular business in the Walker, LA, area sells everything from gas to groceries, operates a small deli (KNOWN for Boudin), and has anything a sportsman could need on his way out the door from hunting/fishing supplies, Fishing Licensing services, rubber boots, deer feed, LIVE bait, beer, cigarettes, cracklins, and more. As Hollie says, "If it's something we don't have, we look into ordering it to keep our customers HAPPY!"
Hear a little more about their 30+ year business straight from Hollie in my interview below!
Laney: Tell us a little history of the business.
Hollie: My parents had two children, me and my younger sister Abbie. We moved to Walker in 1993 and we actually live nextdoor to the store. We all manage operations, from taking care of customers needs, stocking, checking in vendors, placing gas orders, etc. We work well together as a family unit.
Laney: Whose idea was it to open Sportsman Crossing and why did he want to open it?
Hollie: My dad purchased the closed down store in 1991 after deciding he no longer wanted to do construction work, and my mom no longer wanted to do billing/coding work. We officially opened January 1993. Not too long after opening, we started selling Crawfish, Crabs, and Shrimp during the seasons.
Laney: Why do customers go to Sportsman Crossing?
Hollie: We sell a whole variety of things and are not your typical store.
Laney: How do you stand out from other crawfish vendors?
Hollie: We stand behind ALL of our Live sacks and ones we boil ourselves with our SECRET family recipes. My dad showed my sister and I how to boil crawfish at a very early age. We have perfected our craft since then. Also, we have been dealing with our crawfish vendors for almost 30 years and have established relationships with quality vendors.
We also have a crawfish catering trailer that we take to events for customers looking to add a LOUISIANA touch.
Laney: What is something interesting about your business that you want people to know?
Hollie: You are NOT just another face entering our building -- if you become a regular customer, we address you by name and we genuinely appreciate your business. We are all family here and are thankful for those that keep our family business striving.
